About the speaker:
Kaushik Basu is an Indian economist who served as Chief Economist of the World Bank from 2012 to 2016. He is Professor of International Studies and Economics at Cornell University. He has been President of the International Economic Association since June 2017. From 2009 to 2012, during the second term of the United Progressive Alliance, Basu served as Chief Economic Advisor to the Indian government.
In 1992, he founded the Centre for Development Economics at the Delhi School of Economics, where he served as its first director until 1996. Basu was President of the Human Development and Capabilities Association, founded by Amartya Sen. He is the editor of Social Choice and Welfare.
His numerous books include Beyond the Invisible Hand: Groundwork for a New Economics (Princeton University Press, 2010), Choice, Welfare, and Development: A Festschrift in Honour of Amartya K. Sen (co-edited with Suzumura, Kotaro; Pattanaik, Prasanta (1995), Clarendon Press Oxford University Press), and The Republic of Beliefs (Princeton University Press, 2018).
