Modelling Opinion Dynamics and Social Change

While it has long been known that people can influence each other’s opinion, models allow us to understand how this micro-level process can lead to consensus, polarization and societal change on the macro-level. The field has come a long way since the first opinion dynamics model was published almost 70 years ago. 

In particular, the use of computer simulations such as agent-based models have significantly expanded the scope and explanatory power of these models. Among others, models can now be used to study the interplay between social and economic change, investigate the impact of social media algorithms, explain political polarization and can replicate the evolution of empirical opinion patterns. In times of multiple crises which are exacerbated by increasing polarization, this line of research is more important and urgent than ever. 

This year’s Graz Schumpeter Winter School and COLIBRI Focus Workshop is a prime opportunity to obtain state-of-the-art knowledge of models of opinion dynamics and social change, and to discuss future directions with top researchers in the field.

This event aims at both young and established researchers. A limited number of participants will have the opportunity to present their own work and discuss it with the keynote speakers.

How to apply: Applicants should fill out the application form and send it together with their CV and a one-page motivation letter until 30 June 2025 to teresa.lackner(at)uni-graz.at.  Applicants who want to present a paper should also include an extended abstract (2-4 pages) of their work as part of their application.

Tuition fee: A tuition fee of 200€ includes access to the lectures, as well as lunches, coffee breaks and one dinner with the keynote speakers

Location and Venue: Graz is the capital city of the province Styria (Steiermark) and with approx. 300.000 inhabitants Austria’s second largest city. The Old Town of Graz is one of the best preserved in Europe and was awarded World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1999. The charm of the city itself, the proximity to the Alps and a bustling cultural life are but a few advantages Graz has to offer. The Winter School will be held at the University of Graz, which is located close to the city center.
